Chandigarh: After five days of violence, Tuesday passed off peacefully with agitators lifting road and rail blockades across the state. According to the government, blockades have been cleared from railway tracks and roads, including national highways like NH1, connecting Delhi to Chandigarh and NH-10.
Jat groups withdrew the agitation after the government announced that it would table a bill in the assembly for separate Jat quota for jobs and admission to educational institutions in the forthcoming budget session.
All India Jat Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti (AIJASS) senior leader Krishan Kirmara said the agitation was withdrawn following an announcement by the government to give reservation to Jats in state and Central government jobs.
Additional chief secretary PK Das said a curfew is still in force in a few towns like Hisar, Sonipat, Bhiwani and villages of Hansi town because of the prevailing tension. A shop was set ablze in Rohtak on Tuesday morning while a truck was set on fire in Meham town.
Government sources said 20 people died and 200 were injured in the Jat agitation till Tuesday. Four persons died on Monday when police opened fire at protesters blocking the national highway near Sonipat. "There is no report of any fresh clashes on Tuesday," the home secretary said.
